I hate it when I agree with something the Popular Democratic Party does. It takes away from my main message that the commonwealth status must end. While the party of the ‘populares‘ has steadfastly destroyed every opportunity to fix the island’s problems and only make token attempts to fix them; this week they got two things right.
So in the interest of fairness, I think I should point those two things out.
First, the party has passed a bill in the House of Representatives that would take the vote away from inmates currently serving prison time in the next election. I’ve never agreed with the idea that inmates should be allowed to vote. They lost that right when they were convicted of a crime against their fellow citizens. Inmates and their families are of coarse protesting with a march planned for April 19th (curiously) the anniversary of the accident on Vieques Island.
The other thing wasn’t really the party as much as it was the person of Senate President Eduardo Bhatia. Bhatia on debating the new VAT (Value Added Tax), which I believe will be the final nail in the island’s economic coffin, actually said…wait for it..are you ready? Puerto Rico should reduce SPENDING before raising taxes!

Good job Eduardo! Could this mean that in the midst of the socialist demons that make up most of the Popular Party’s leadership there might actually be someone with some common sense?
Bhatia has a long history of standing on principles even though I don’t always agree with his principles. At least the man tries. Much like one of his predecessors Kenneth Mcclintock he occasionally is out of step with his party. That is a good thing. We need more politicians in Puerto Rico to step out of the partisan box and do what is right for Puerto Rico, not what is needed for the next election.
Let’s hope these common sense ideas spread like an out of control virus and the government finally starts doing what is needed instead of what sounds good as a campaign slogan.
